All Aboard!

Whether you are a rail fan, a nature and wildlife enthusiast, or a vacationer looking for a unique and relaxed way to see the spectacular beauty of Northeast Oregon, a ride on the Eagle Cap Excursion Train is sure to please! Watch this website for exciting news as the excursion train prepares for the 2012 season!

The Eagle Cap Excursion Train operates on a section of the historic Joseph Branch, between Elgin and Minam. Along the way, the track passes through spectacular roadless areas as it follows the Grande Ronde River down stream to its confluence with the Wallowa River. It then turns up the magnificent Wild & Scenic Wallowa River for a few miles before reversing direction and returning to Elgin. The round trip is about 39 miles and takes 3.5 hours.

The Joseph Branch is a 63 mile long railroad, that links the communities of Elgin, Wallowa, Lostine, Enterprise and Joseph in Northeast Oregon with the Union Pacific railroad in La Grande. The railroad is owned by the governments of Wallowa and Union Counties and governed by the Wallowa Union Railroad Authority, which also operates rail freight service on the track.

The Eagle Cap Train excursions are staffed by the professional train crew of the Wallowa Union Railroad and volunteers from a non-profit organization called the Friends of the Joseph Branch.

Find out more of the background and development of the train by exploring the pages under the “About” menu links, and plan your excursion by visiting the pages under the “All Aboard” menu links. And don’t miss the video and photos!

The train boarding site in Elgin, Oregon is located at 300 N. 8th Street and is easy to see from Oregon Highway 82, the Wallowa Lake Highway.
